From the page: "AN ORGANIC farming campaign was launched by the EU at the Foire de Libramont agricultural fair in Belgium yesterday. Under the slogan: "Organic farming. Good for nature, good for you", the campaign aims to inform consumers about the meaning and benefits of organic farming and food production. " Good slogan, and I like the fact that there is some marketing support on the website. Given the BILLIONS spent on conventional ag support, I hope this is just the start!

From the page: "''We dug one-foot-square holes,'' Gregory said. 'The first farmer counted three worms in his soil. The second had four. We dug mine and counted 179 worms. Both of them called me a liar to my face. They said, `This is B.S., you put the worms in there.' We went out and dug another hole where they wanted in my field. They counted 180 worms.''"

It has been a rough 2 years in WI for ALL farmers. I have met and spoken with both farmers in this article -Josh Engel of Driftless sold me 200 lbs of seed potatoes. While the article seems to paint a rosier picture for Organic Farmers since they are diversified and can replant late crops, it skates over some very serious dilemnas. First off, Organic Farmers live and die by their soil -and floods wash much of the top soil away leaving exposed subsoil and rocks. That can take decades to rebuild -if ever. As important, crop insurance for Organic Farmers is essentially non-existant or so expensive that no one uses it. We are all essentially self insured. Please be sure to support you local farmers market -and even kick in a few bucks to help them rebuild. Our future depends on their skills carrying forward!

From the page: "Although the conventional wisdom is that small family farms are backward and unproductive, research shows that small farms are much more productive than large farms if total output is considered rather than yield from a single crop. Integrated farming systems in which the small-scale farmer produces grains, fruits, vegetables, fodder, and animal products out-produce yield per unit of single crops such as corn (monocultures) on large-scale farms." ~~~Interesting article/release on the many and varied benifits of small farming in the developing world. My favorite was the focus on them as resource pools for surviving the post Peak world.
