It has been a rough 2 years in WI for ALL farmers. I have met and spoken with both farmers in this article -Josh Engel of Driftless sold me 200 lbs of seed potatoes. While the article seems to paint a rosier picture for Organic Farmers since they are diversified and can replant late crops, it skates over some very serious dilemnas. First off, Organic Farmers live and die by their soil -and floods wash much of the top soil away leaving exposed subsoil and rocks. That can take decades to rebuild -if ever. As important, crop insurance for Organic Farmers is essentially non-existant or so expensive that no one uses it. We are all essentially self insured. Please be sure to support you local farmers market -and even kick in a few bucks to help them rebuild. Our future depends on their skills carrying forward!

This helps to explain why ice sheet melting and weather volatility are several decades ahead of previous predictions.

From the page: "We know from studying earlier civilizations that declined and collapsed that it was often shrinking harvests that were responsible. For the Sumerians, it was rising salt concentrations in the soil that lowered wheat and barley yields and brought down this remarkable early civilization. For the Mayans, it was soil erosion following deforestation that undermined their agriculture and set the stage for their demise. For our twenty-first century civilization, it is rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and the associated rise in temperature that threatens future harvests."

Real Cost Accounting. We hear so much about "letting the markets work" from the current administration. But then we mask the true costs of our energy consumption, pesticide use, etc. Enron had faulty accounting too.

From the page: "He admitted that Europe's industries were involved in ferocious lobbying to win favourable terms from the regime of carbon cuts." Some things are the same over the pond apparently. The inclusion of international aviation in the discussion is huge though.
