From the page: "The sharp rise in food prices, driven principally by the increased cost of grain, is a worrying development for the Chinese authorities which have been trying to contain inflation to stop the economy from overheating. -----if you thought Haiti was bad... Way to go Bush, thanks for promoting Ethanol from food crops in a period of all time low global grain reserves. "I am afraid that grain prices will edge up in the months to come as global supply is tight and domestic consumers may resort to panic purchasing in expectation of high prices," said Zhang Shiyuan, an analyst with investment firm Southwest Securities."

From the page: "Five people have been killed in a week of demonstrations in Haiti over high food prices in the poorest country in the Americas, while unions in the West African nation of Burkina Faso called a general strike over soaring food and fuel costs. "There is a risk that this unrest will spread in countries where 50 to 60 percent of income goes to food," Diouf added." ----And we turn more and more land to corn to fuel our F-150's.

If you read down the article there is a riveting excerpt from the book. That this happened in living memory, in the "civilized" world is a wake up call to us all as a reminder of the the terror and horror of what happens on the ground when a State fails. Especially poignant given the rising numbers of States slipping into the abyss with growing pressures of slumping economies, resource decline, and global warming.

Great radio story on the disparity of the rural and urban poor living with daily food insecurity, while the upper middle class (me) funds meteoric growth in Whole Foods and CSA's. Mark Winne makes some great comments from his book Closing the Food Gap.

Glad to see their is still sanity in North America... even if it is outside our borders. Only frustration is the "official" backpedaling.

Part 4 in the Global Gardening in the Tropics Permaculture Series. Spends most of the video detailing the ridiculous economics of monoculture agriculture in the Tropics. Very moving story concerning the saving of one child (literally) through Permaculture and that boy's quest to bring permaculture to save his village. Wow, Wow, WOW!
